After a stopover at Istanbul (old Constantinople) for the two-centred holiday, you spend the first seven days exploring the masterpieces of Byzantine architecture and its decorative mosaics. With visits to three museums, the city walls and the centre for tile making (Iznik) and a day trip on the ferry boat to Nicaea. For the second week you fly to Dalaman for a relaxing cruise on your luxury gulet down the coast to visit the world of the much admired St Nicholas – patron saint of sailors and merchants – who became a saint of the East and West Christian churches and Greece and Russia, in time becoming the model for Father Christmas.
