Who is known as 'the Father of History', born on this coast?
Added: 20 November 2008
Herodatus of Halicarnassus (Bodrum), who was born 484 BC and who wrote ‘The Histories', definitely one of the most entertaining books ever written and the first great work written in Greek prose. He was a real explorer of the past and his intense curiosity, superb note-taking ability and flair for telling a good story made him a magnificent writer. He also wrote the first ever book on geography and topography.

We visit Bodrum to show you the Greek theatre and the site of the famous Mausoleum of Halicarnassus (one of ‘the Seven Wonders of the World'). Also its excellent fortifications including the Myndus Gate (which initially defeated Alexander the Great - stand where he stood) and the great crusader castle of Saint Peter (built in the reign of King Henry IV of England in the early part of the 15th Cent) and now a fine museum of marine archaeology.
